A Girl Called Eddy - Press Release, May 2004
New Jersey-born singer/songwriter Erin Moran (AKA ‘Eddy’) has just signed a worldwide deal with ANTI, home to artists such as Tom Waits, Tricky and Daniel Lanois.
Her elegant self-titled debut album was produced by former Pulp guitarist Richard Hawley and features the band that graced his acclaimed solo release ‘Lowedges’. It will be released on June 21, preceded by a single ‘Somebody Hurt You’ on June 7.
A Girl Called Eddy’s poignant tales of love and loss have a universal and timeless appeal, no doubt inspired by a long list of musical heroes including Burt Bacharach, Todd Rundgren and Brian Wilson. While her achingly rich emotive voice and fine-tuned ability to convey the heart of a story bear comparison to Karen Carpenter, Dusty Springfield, Chrissie Hynde and many of the greats.
Written in a bedsit flat in New York and recorded in a wintry Sheffield, the album eloquently captures the bittersweet-ness of a life seen through a romantic yet crystal-clear lens. Although it’s mostly autobiographical, anyone who has ever had a relationship mean something will recognise the deftly observed minutiae on display here.
A Girl Called Eddy supported Tom McRae on his UK tour in late 2003 and was a special guest of The Cure at their recent London Barfly show. She is supporting Josh Ritter throughout the UK in June.
“Moran’s husky, smoky voice rivals those of Beth Orton and Tracey Thorn, and fans of Aimee Mann are going to die happy... it’s the tastiest fodder for hopeless romantics and the walking wounded since Mark Eitzel’s Songs of Love Live” – The Times, June 2003
