Helene - Marking Time Cover

Helene - Press Release, February 2005

London-based band Helene return on March 7th with the release of new single 'Marking Time' on Global Warming (Cat:WARMCD 23)

Having met at a PJ Harvey gig, Helene Dineen and Graham Gargiulo formed the core of Barefoot Contessa in 1995. They quickly caught the attention of a certain John Peel. Four highly acclaimed albums followed and in 2002 the band became known simply as Helene to showcase the expressive voice of Dineen.

In 2003 the band released the 'Postcard' album - considered by The Telegraph to be one of the records of the year.

Led by Helene's ice-cool vocals 'Marking Time' is a triumphant declaration of intent. Produced by Jon Fryer (Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance) the lead track's blend of Nick Cave-style instrumentation and bruised blues vocals is an enticing lesson in smouldering pop.

The Mazzy Star and Velvets influences remain on Your Laughter, while the epic Big Talker broods and simmers with all the pent up passion that's already won them admiration from the likes of Mark Radcliffe, Alan McGee and philospher Alain de Botton.

'Unimpeachably brilliant...deeply gorgeous' - Sunday Telegraph.

'Gorgeously hypnotic...' - N.M.E

'One of the best singers in Britain' - Evening Standard.

'Helene know the untrodden paths that connect Patsy Cline to Patti Smith' - Hot Press.
