Saucy Monky - Press Release, June 2005
Saucy Monky,
UK debut album ‘Turbulence’ out 26th September
Measured Records (MR MONKY 001)
Saucy Monky make their UK debut in September with the release of ‘Turbulence’. The four piece are based around guitar playing singer songwriters Annmarie Cullen (originally from Dublin) and Cynthia Catania (from New Jersey). The pair met on the LA club scene in 2001 and, together with bassist Carson Cohen and drummer Adam Marcello, they trade in feisty, fuzzy and melodic guitar pop.
‘Turbulence’ picks up where their indie-leaning US-released debut ‘Celebrity Trash’ (named after a lingerie store in LA) left off. A cover of The Divinyls 1991 hit ‘I Touch Myself’ is an example of their playful staple sound. Yet among songs that recall The Pretenders, Luscious Jackson, Elastica and Belly, the new record finds them evoking the sultry rootsiness of Lucinda Williams on the choruses of ‘Everybody Wants Something More’, Stonesy white soul on ‘Everyday Lover’ and a breathy torch-y quality on ‘Spark’ and ‘Pink Flamingos’. Effortlessly exchanging and interweaving lead vocal and songwriting duties, it’s hard to tell which of the girls you’re listening to at any one time. Whatever, there seems to be a successful chemistry at work here. Says Annmarie, ‘She’s a hip lyric writer and I have more of a pop sensibility.’
Thanks to an appearance at last year’s Oxegen and O2 In The Park festivals, Saucy Monky are already starting to make waves in Annmarie’s native Ireland. Hot Press editor Niall Stokes described ‘Turbulence’ as ‘rich, smart, sexy, thrilling, entertaining, diverse and hugely accomplished’. Meanwhile, a growing fanbase in the US has seen them nestling alongside Coldplay at the top of the triple A commercial radio charts.
