Tish Hinojosa
New album ‘A Heart Wide Open’ out 1st August
Measured Records (Cat: MR TISH 001)
Acclaimed Austin-based singer songwriter Tish Hinojosa (ee-no-ho-sah) releases her first studio album in five years this summer. Although not widely known in the UK, back home she has won awards, collaborated with such luminaries as Lucinda Williams, Joan Baez and Nanci Griffith and even performed at the White House for the Clintons.
The youngest of thirteen daughters born to Mexican immigrant parents, Hinojosa grew up in San Antonio, Texas. Equally beguiled by the popular Mexican music she listened to on her mother’s kitchen radio and the jangly sounds of the Beatles and The Byrds, she has maintained and nurtured a cross cultural set of references on her many albums ever since.
Leaving San Antonio in her twenties, she lived in Taos and then Nashville – where she fell in love with the music of Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris and got a job as an in house demo singer for a publishing company. It took her a longer time to interest people in her own material than in her crystal pure voice. Nevertheless she has released on Warner, Rounder and A&M and picked up a NAIRD award for Best Folk Album for ‘Culture Swing’ in 1992.
‘A Heart Wide Open’ was co-produced by Tish and her long time guitarist /mandolin player Marvin Dykhuis and bassist Glenn Kawamoto. Effortlessly mixing Nashville twang with Latin American swing, Hinojosa creates a rich tapestry full of lyrical imagery and detailed characters such as ‘blue eyed Billy’ with his ‘sun baked skin’.
‘Would You Love Me Back Again’ gets two different treatments and appears as a breezy Americana song then as a live bonus track sung in Spanish. Whilst ‘Something More Than This’ has shades of Aimee Mann, ‘The Kitchen Table’ harks back to her childhood in San Antonio as she recalls holding her ‘father’s morning coffee’ and the touch of her mother’s hands.
‘Her songs are richly detailed slices of life...Hinojosa's is a strong, poetic, sensual, and conscious voice’ - Spin Magazine
